FUMC of Scotch Plains is a caring church, reaching out into our community and the world. Here are some of the many ministries in which we participate:
Covenant UMC Free Meals Program
Our sister church in Plainfield feeds people in need all through the year. Members of our church assist with the Free Meals program hosted at the Covenant UMC, 631 E. Front St. Plainfield, NJ. (908-756-2684) one evening each month. The clients include the homeless and others who have limited financial resources for food.
Our members prepare the food in the afternoon and serve it in the evening. You can volunteer to do either or both, make a contribution to help purchase food (to FUMC of Scotch Plains), or just bake brownies! See Chuck or Joan Hoeckle for more information.
Home First Garden Project
If gardening is your hobby, perhaps you’d like to start seedlings in the spring for the Home First Scotch Plains Garden! Home First volunteers plant over 400 seeds each year to fill a garden of vegetables and herbs for the clients of Home First who are in transitional housing after being homeless. Currently Home First has two gardens – one in Plainfield and one in Scotch Plains. You are also invited to go and help tend the garden and then reap the harvest! If you would like to help, contact Joan Hoeckle. Click here to read more about Home First and their programs, including the Community Garden Project.
Scotch Plains Food Bank
You are invited to bring non-perishable canned or dry foods to Church with you any Sunday…items that will be donated to the Scotch Plains Food Bank. Collection bins are in the narthex. Members take the items to the food pantry weekly. Click here for a list of the most needed items.
Join many of our congregation who are sponsoring a child through World Vision. World Vision, a Christian humanitarian organization, is working in over 100 countries to help better the lives of children and their families by helping them to reach their potential and become self sufficient. When you sponsor a child (or children!), “you can provide help and hope for a boy or girl in need — and build a relationship that transcends cultures and distance.” For more information, contact Jim Naugle. You can read more about World Vision here.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Classes (Chinese)
ESL classes are held on Sundays for Chinese immigrants wishing to better learn the English language. The class runs after the Sunday worship service, from noon until 1 pm throughout the year. For more information about the ESL class, contact the church office at 908-322-9222.
